Starting out on a new borehole well project can be quite daunting. So many unknowns. Regulations and applications. Expensive consultants. Is there even water down there? Will it work? Who do I speak to?

Holequest offer everything you require (a full service, hence “from source to supply”) and our experienced and friendly team are here to help. We have written this guide detailing the various steps most often required to help you understand what you can expect.

1. Initial Advice / Consultation

Our highly experienced team will be happy to take your call or email and discuss your requirements from the proposed water supply. We’ll lead you through the process and advise you of the information we require to appropriately assess the system demands, allowing an appropriately targeted offer to be made for the works.

2. Detailed Hydrological Reviews / Surveys

We offer various services in relation to site surveys from simple remote map review and online data source research to detailed infield surveys all supported by 3rd party reporting such as British Geological Society well prognosis reports, Coal Mining Reports and mining risk assessments.

3. Permitting and Licences

The requirements for permitting and licencing of borehole wells varies depending on the required abstraction, geographical location and underlying geology, Our team of skilled staff will advise which (if any) permits or licences are required for your site and then prepare, submit and manage your applications to  SEPA, EA, Coal Authority…etc

4. Well Drilling and Lining

We offer a wide range of water well drilling and lining services from simple shallow wells constructed in superficial deposits through to large diameter well to depths in excess of 200m in solid geology.

The type of well and the construction technique will be driven by the review of the clients needs and the pre-site works assessment of available data or 3rd party reports.

Drilling techniques for shallow wells in superficial deposits could be either traditional cable percussion methods for 150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 300mm or 400mm drilled boreholes in the order of a maximum 25m deep.

Typically the larger diameter, deeper or wells within the solid geology (bedrock) would be drilled quickly and cost effectively utilising rotary drilling techniques with compressed air, water, mud or polymer used as the flushing medium. These wells can be drilled at various sizes appropriate to the end use up to 400mm diameter and to in excess of 200m deep.

Once the borehole has been drilled and both geological and hydrological conditions have been reviewed a design can be developed for an appropriate screening and sealing system to maximise the available yield. Through our extensive network of supply chain partners we provide and install WRAS approved uPVC or Stainless Steel well lining in sizes ranging  from 90mm up to 250mm diameter or larger if required.

5. Well Yield and Water Quality Testing

Alongside any well drilling and lining element stands the field and laboratory testing which provides details on the available yield and quality of the water source tapped into by the well.

We hold a very wide range of submersible pumps that we utilise to test the installed wells. The yield test could be a simple short duration test for a single house supply to larger discharge and longer duration tests where demand is significant and SEPA/EA licencing is required.

As part of the above we utilise barometrically compensated ground water monitoring probes to record water level and temperature pre, during and post test to provide a detailed and accurate record of the water levels.

Additionally, we have the capability to undertake field water quality monitoring during the yield test to assess any development of change in the water quality as the test progresses. This along with a suite of microbiological and chemistry testing on water samples recovered from the yield test performed by a 3rd party accredited laboratory.

6. Technical Reporting and Water Treatment Advice

The information recovered from the yield test, field water quality tests and laboratory testing along with the well construction details are compiled into a report describing the works and offering a discussion on water quality and what would be required (or not) to provide a potable supply.

7. Design and Installation of Pumping, Control and Water Treatment Systems

The well report is used by our expert team, along with post well drilling discussions with you, to develop a scheme to turn the well into a viable supply for your end use.

The design process considers the well yield, the treatment that will be required (or not) to provide the water quality required for the end use along with appropriate control and monitoring systems.

As part of this process a detailed review of any existing infrastructure is also vital to the success of the project.

8. Maintenance of wells, pumping, control and treatment systems

Once your supply has been commissioned, you will likely want it to stay in service for a lifetime or longer! We offer a full post installation maintenance / repair / replacement service for pumps, control system, treatments etc. (This also applies to systems that we were not involved in the original design or installation of).

We also offer Iron / Manganese fouling removal from wells along with mechanical cleaning and jetting.
